5 Tips for Creating Your Own Home Office Space

As a Mum, the one thing I need is a space to work that I can call my own. When you have kids you literally share everything, right down to snot and vomit. We have such a small home that it’s exceptionally hard to find a space I can call my own and designate as a workspace; without having to pack up the kitchen table before we eat! So, I made some space in our very overcrowded and mutli-function master bedroom to create my own office nook; well the reality is it’s a table with some flowers and a pic on the wall but it’s still mine!

1) Little space means creative storage

If you’re like us and are really cramped for space it’s important to have good storage options; a desk with draws is always a good place to start so your desk isn't overcrowded. If you've got the space, a desk and a separate set of draws and storage for stock if needed is always handy. Try and utilize the space above the desk, a hutch or shelving is ideal.

2) Your own space doesn't mean costing $$$

I am all about creating a space that doesn't cost you a fortune,
especially if you're starting a business venture that isn't making
any money yet. A desk, computer and your favourite quote framed
on the wall is enough to get you started. Adding a nice smelling
candle and a fake plant doesn't go astray either. As you and the
business both grow, your space can grow with you. Kmart has
now earned itself a reputation for being the best place to start with stationary and décor that can cost as little as $1 and we all know how good a new pen and notebook can make us feel.

3) Make sure your space motivates you

Make sure your space motivates you. There is no use creating a bland, dull space that doesn't speak to you and that you don’t want to hang out in. When you sit in your space you need to feel like you can relax, work, get into the zone, smash some things off the “to do” list and kick some goals.

4) Tell the kids its off limits

It may not be easy and may take a few reminders but let the kids know that your space is off limits and Mum’s important work is there. There is nothing worse than sitting down ready and motivated to work and trying to find the pen you left in the top drawer; only to discover the kids have taken it and it could now be anywhere in the house. Let’s not forget to mention when you open your laptop or computer screen and the kid’s games are up and still playing.

5) Me Time

It’s nice to have a space that you can call your own for when you just need some me time or five minutes to yourself. As much as sitting on the toilet and locking the door is okay, it would be nice to sit at your own desk chair surrounded by your own nice things. Besides the kids still find you when you’re on the toilet and the incessant knocking just makes it worse.
