This is my first time blogging in a little while, life has just been so crazy hectic, as I know you will all relate to!
Recently I was very fortunate to feature on Channel Seven's afternoon program 'The Daily Edition' with Sally and Ryan, which I was very grateful for their time. We had a chat about my two books that I have co-authored which discuss IVF and the "Birds and the Bees". Having been a surrogate and experiencing the process of IVF during three rounds of egg donation and ultimately the surrogacy itself, (not to mention friends and families experiences) certainly hit a spot with me. A spot that made me realise how important I believe it is to talk about these topics, not only among adults but with our children too.
In the 21st century, there are more ways than one to make a baby. I think it's so important to share this knowledge with our kids, to start the conversation with them. My book, 'The 21st Century Guide to the Birds and the Bees', is a great tool to help parents and guardians with starting the conversation. The book talks about the many ways a baby can be made, including IVF, IUI, surrogacy and egg donation. These concepts are explained through appropriate child friendly language and illustrations, the earlier you start these conversations the easier it becomes accepted, which I believe becomes so important when kids reach the school yard.
I believe its vital that our kids are exposed to these topics early and given the chance to react, ask questions and accept things for what they are. I know I want my kids to be aware of all the options available should the situation arise that they may need them in the future. It should alleviate any additional pressure, shame or embarrassment that some people currently experience when pursuing these avenues.
'The 21st Century Guide to the Birds and the Bees' also discusses the traditional way to conceive. The book opens up the inevitable discussion between adults and kids about how to make a baby. I often get asked when is the right time to have 'The Talk'; in my experience the kids will let you know!! If they don't, small bite size pieces of relevant factual information will be all that they need.
The book is aimed at kids aged 4 years and up and is extremely child and adult friendly. The book helps take the anxiousness out of the conversation for parents and creates dialogue with your children which is just so important.
Currently, I am writing a new children's book aimed at 'Tweens', this will be my first solo book project and I'm very excited to be releasing this book just in time for Christmas. Paired with a new product range it will hopefully start a whole new conversation with the young ladies of today.
